In keeping with its public health and safety mission, NSF offers electrical safety testing and certification services for a variety of product types, from electrical conduit to foodservice equipment to swimming pool pumps, and many products in between.
The Electrical Safety testing laboratory is accredited by OSHA as a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL). This signifies NSF has met the necessary qualifications specified in the program regulations. In addition, NSF is accredited by the Standards Council of Canada to perform electrical testing and certifications according to CSA standards.
NSF's electrical safety testing falls into one of three main categories.
Food Equipment
Plastic Piping program (Electrical conduit/PVC)
Pool and Spa program
NSF's testing capacities are not limited to the USA. NSF is now pleased to offer our European, Middle Eastern and African customers the opportunity to have Electrical Safety Testing performed either directly at their own plants or at an appointed laboratory in Italy. This option will help our customers to minimize both transportation delays and general costs
Food Equipment
In order to satisfy the needs of its food equipment customers, NSF now offers electrical safety certification to the most common UL standards. By bundling certifications, NSF is able to maximize all possible logistical, time, and cost efficiencies in your favor. One-stop sanitation and electrical safety certification enables your company to deliver a safe product to market on time and on budget.
OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) recognizes NSF as a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL), which enables us to provide electrical safety certification to all foodservice-related UL standards.
Standards
NSF offers electrical safety testing and certification for foodservice equipment to following standards:
UL 73 Motor-Operated Appliances
UL 94 Tests for Flammability of Plastic Materials for Parts in Devices and Appliances
UL 197 Commercial Electric Cooking Appliances
UL 399 Drinking-Water Coolers
UL 466 Electric Scales
UL 471 Commercial Refrigerators and Freezers
UL 541 Refrigerated Vending Machines
UL 563 Ice Makers
UL 621 Ice Cream Makers
UL 749 Household [Electric] Dishwashers
UL 751 Vending Machines
UL 763 Motor-Operated Commercial Food Preparing Machines
UL 921 Commercial Electric Dishwashers
UL 982 Motor-Operated Household Food Preparing Machines
Plastic Piping/Conduit
As an additional service for its plastic piping manufacturer clients, NSF provides electrical safety testing of PVC and HDPE electrical conduit and telecommunications duct. This program was founded in 2001 to help clients save time and resources by bundling both their health effects and electrical safety testing. These services, however, are available to any client, existing or new, regardless of their need for health effects testing.
NSF performs electrical testing entirely at its Ann Arbor, Michigan headquarters. The facility has been listed in the Federal Register as an OSHA Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) for electrical safety and is also accredited by the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) to perform certifications to CSA standards.
Standards
In this program area, NSF tests to the following related standards:
UL 651 - Schedule 40 and 80 PVC Conduit
UL651A -Type EB and A Rigid PVC Conduit and HDPE Conduit
UL 651B -Continuous Length HDPE Conduit
NEMA TC-2 -Electrical Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) Tubing and Conduit
NEMA TC-6 -Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) Plastic Utilities for Underground Installations
ASTM F512 - Standard Specification for Smooth-Wall Poly(Vinyl Chloride) (PVC) Conduit and Fittings for Underground Installation
ASTM F2160 - Standard Specification for Solid Wall High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) Conduit Based on Controlled Outside Diameter (OD)
Pool and Spa
The NSF Pool & Spa Equipment Program performs electrical testing and evaluation to address safety issues in pumps, feeders, chlorinators and other equipment according to the nationally accepted Electrical Safety standards. This service is a nice complement to the NSF/ANSI Standard 50 health effects testing that NSF manages for pool and spa components.
NSF is well-respected among regulators and public health officials across the US and Canada, and the laboratory is accredited by OSHA as a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) for electrical safety.
Standards
In this program area, NSF tests to these electrical safety standards:
UL Standard 1081 - Swimming Pool Pumps, Filters, and Chlorinators
UL Standard 1563 - Electric Spas, Equipment Assemblies, and Associated Equipment
UL Standard 1795 - Hydromassage Bathtubs
Manufacturers can also save time and money by having NSF complete their product certifications for sanitation and electrical safety, as well as compliance with California Energy Efficiency Requirements. NSF is your one-stop shop for all of your compliance needs.
